Approach to Starting Point

□ Transportation：Airplane
□ Time to Starting Point：About 3.5 hours from Kagoshima city to Kirishima by car, and about 1.5 hours from Haneda Airport to Kagoshima Airport.
□ Further Information：

1. I went there via Kagoshima Airport because most of my climbs were in Kagoshima Prefecture. If you’re focusing on Kumamoto's mountains for your trip, it would be best to fly into Kagoshima Airport. It would take about 1 ~ 1.5 hours from Kagoshima Airport to Mt. Aso by car.

2. Because of the earthquake which occured in 2016, almost all of the roads connected to Mt. Aso were damaged. There was just one path, called The Milk Road, for getting there. Never trust your car navigation's directions. I recommend you to confirm the latest information on the web in advance.

My Impressions

Mt. Aso is located in Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu island, and it is the biggest active volcano in Japan. There is a ropeway, but it has been closed for a couple of years. There's no way to climb to the summit. All we can do is just look at pictures on google image search. Unfortunately, the weather was bad with dense fog and sometimes rainy, so it was a bit boring. No one knows when we can climb it. I'm looking forward to climbing it some day.
